WellPoint Systems

Wellpoint dewatering can be used to lower and control groundwater levels in excavations, in order to create a dry and stable working environment. Some of the suitable applications are pipeline construction, shallow foundations, and trench works. Wellpoint dewatering can be used to lower and control groundwater levels in excavations, in order to create a dry and stable working environment. Some of the suitable applications are pipeline construction, shallow foundations and trench works.
A typical wellpoint system consists of a series of small diameters wells (known as wellpoints) connected via a header pipe, to the suction side of a suitable wellpoint pump. The pump creates a vacuum in the header pipe, drawing water up out of the ground. For long pipeline trenches, horizontal wellpoints may be installed by special trenching machines. We at HARCO’s are experts in establishing and making use of wellpoints and have an inventory of vacuum pumps to execute such tasks. This system can draw the water table down to between 3 and 8 meters, which will result in dry and stable condition for work to take place.

150 4Deep well dewatering is applied to relatively deep excavations (more than 5 m deep) in soils or rocks where permeability is between minimal (e.g. sands) to high (e.g. gravels). Once the well is drilled, a well screen is installed and surrounded by filter gravel. The internal diameter of a deep well is in the range 125 to 350 mm. The diameter of each well is determined by HARCO based on the flow rates required. The internal diameter of the wells controls the maximum size of the pump that can be installed. This system is ideal for high rise construction sites with a 12 month or more construction duration and is nondisruptive to the excavation process. The most common type of pump used in deep well dewatering systems is the slim line electric borehole submersible pump. French Drain And Trenching Services

A French drain, which may also be called a curtain drain or perimeter drain, is a gravel-filled trench that includes a perforated or slotted pipe. These drains are used to direct surface water or groundwater away from a specific area, such as a home’s foundation, construction site, etc. French drains direct surface level water toward the lowest point and allows it to seep through the surface level gravel into the drain. This gravel also blocks the passage of excess debris. The water is then collected in the perforated pipe, running at the base of the drain, and directed away from the site and toward a more suitable area for daylighting or infiltration. At HARCO’s we are experts at providing trenching services wherein the Trench system can accelerate the movement of water or re-direct seepage water by installing perforated drainage pipes in narrow trenches covered with gravel. Water, just like most things, takes the path of least resistance. Subsurface water would much rather travel through gravel and open drain pipes than force its way through soil.

Bypass & Pumping Activities

150 5One of the objectives of the construction management team is to minimize interruptions for water and gas applications and maintain continuity of flow for sewer applications. The key to achieving this is the bypass pumping system. For gravity applications, the system should be able to adequately pump the upstream flow and discharge it to the manhole downstream. For water applications, the system should be able to deliver the needed flow volume and pressure to the end-user. At Harco, we ensure that the bypass system has the adequate pumping capacity to handle the flow with emergency backup pumps to ensure no interruption to existing services and our bypass pipe fittings have sufficient strength to withstand the surge water pressures.
